Preparing for the UCT

The biggest weekend in Union County is upon us once again, as West Union is set to host the 2012 Union County basketball Tournament next Thursday through Saturday, Jan. 12-14.
Myrtle will enter the tourney as the top seed on both the boys’ and girls’ sides, with the Hawks at 11-5 and the Lady Hawks a perfect 15-0. Also on the girls’ side, three-time defending champion New Albany is the two seed at 7-6, followed by West Union (6-8), Ingomar (6-10) and East Union (0-14).
With an 11-6 record, East Union will be the two seed for the boys, followed by defending champion New Albany (8-7), then Ingomar (8-8) and West Union (5-9).
New Albany and West Union girls will open the tournament at 5 p.m. on Thursday, followed by Ingomar and West Union boys at 6:30 and Ingomar and East Union girls at 8 p.m.
Myrtle will play the first two games on Friday, beginning with the Lady Hawks versus the Ingomar-East Union winner at 5 p.m. and the Hawks facing either Ingomar or West Union at 6:30. The Urchins and Bulldogs will close out the evening at 8 p.m., and the championship games are slated for 6 and 7:30 p.m. starts on Saturday.
Looking at the match-ups, the game I’m most excited about early on would have to be the two, three boys’ game between East Union and New Albany on Friday.
The Bulldogs clearly hold the height advantage with Moses Kingsley and Daniel Drummond in the post averaging 11.6 and 11.4 points per game, respectively, but don’t count out the Urchins and their outside shooting from Chris Tables and Trey Barkley, who have accounted for 71 of East Union’s 97 made three-pointers this season.
I’m also keeping in mind a possible Myrtle-Ingomar boys’ match-up on Friday that could be equally as fun to watch should the Falcons defeat West Union on Thursday.
The Lady Hawks appear to be the favorite on the girls’ side, and we could be looking at another NA-Myrtle match-up in the finals. This game has gone in favor of the Lady Bulldogs the last three seasons, but keep in mind Myrtle has already defeated New Albany twice this season.
I’m looking forward to another great tournament this year, and as always, you can keep track of the UCT all weekend on the Gazette website as well as my Twitter account, ezaremba1618.
