Kelly, Andrew, Roo, and Logan Douglass spent July 7-14 in Destin, Fla. Logan (2) got in the “big” pool for the first time, and it was the first time for no floaties for Roo (4). Roo got in the ocean and was so proud of himself. A salty water splash got in his eye so his stay was short lived, but he was still proud of himself. The family spent the week relaxing at the pool and on the beach.
Beverly and Larry Hall had a quick weekend getaway to Gulfport and Mobile on July 15-17. They visited with Sherry, Hannah, Joyce and Paul Harris, cousins of Beverly’s.
Beverly and Larry Hall took Twanda Black to Edmon, Okla., from July 21-23 to visit with Twanda’s nephew, Josh Bryant. Josh is the son of Franklin Bryant, Twanda’s brother. Josh is a petroleum engineer at Chesapeake Energy. He was proud to show his kinfolks his new house.
They toured Oklahoma City which is very close to Edmond. The Oklahoma City Memorial was very touching. The Memorial honors those who died in the bombing of the federal building on April 19, 1995. One hundred sixty-eight people died, nineteen of them small children. The name of the display is “The Field of Empty Chairs.” The bronze chairs sit on a glass bases and the names of the victims are etched on the glass bases. The chairs are placed in nine rows, representing the nine floors of the federal building. While they were there, Josh carried them to eat dinner at an old Victorian home.
Mark, Kerri, Morgan, and Sami Bridges, Virgie and Ross Reed (Kerri’s parents), Kelly Reed (Kerri’s sister), and Kaycee Todd (Kerri’s niece) went to Gatlinburg, Tenn., from July 20-July 25. They stayed at the Edgewater Hotel in downtown Gatlinburg.
On Sunday, July 22, Mark and the girls went white water rafting on the Ocoee River. It was Class IV rapids where they held the Oympics several years ago. Mark and Sami loved it.
While they were at the rapids, Kerri, Kelly and Virgie and Ross Reed went to Roaring Fork Nature Trail. While on the trail they saw a black bear. Mark said the odds are always pretty good to see a bear on this trail. I'll have to remember that because I've never had any luck seeing a bear. It's on my bucket list.
The highlight of their trip was the helicopter ride over Pigeon Forge.
Regina Russell enjoyed a trip July 20-24 to Orange Beach, Ala. Going with her on the trip were James and Rachel Hill, Regina Russell, Pam Harrison, Terry, Melody, Gracie, and Jackson Hill, and Tim Hill. It was the first time that Regina’s daddy, James Hill, 72, had ever seen the ocean. Their favorite eating spot was The Hangout.
Malcolm Rhea, Belinda Davis, Audene Cooper, and Nina Work attended the funeral of Malcolm’s cousin, Bill Higgenbothem, at Bellevue Baptist Church in Memphis, Tenn., on Saturday, July 28. Malcolm is now the oldest living cousin on his mother’s side.
The Macedonia youth arrived home on Thursday, July 19. They spent five days “street witnessing” and led three people to the Lord. Olivia Williams said witnessing to the people of New Orleans was eye-opening. I imagine many of the kids saw things they had never seen before. We don’t know how to appreciate North Mississippi until we visit other places.
The last day they went on a swamp tour of Honey Island where they saw owls, egrets, devil’s horses, bees, and alligators. On the island there is an old rotted tree where the bees have built a tremendous hive. This is where the island gets its name. Reed said there were millions of bees around that beehive.
The group also went to see “The Dark Knight Rises” in IMAX.
Jimmy Cobb, Danny Cobb’s grandfather, was buried on Sunday, July 29. He lived in the Pleasant Ridge community.
About 20 gathered at West Union Attendance Center on Sunday, July 29 for prayer for the coming school year. We went in each room lifting up prayers for students and staff. Can you think of a better way to start the school year?
Thought for the week: “To hear God’s voice, turn down the world’s volume.”
