Hollis Simpson Obituary
Hollis Doyle Simpson, 66, died Thursday, Aug. 23, 2012 at the North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo. He was born Dec. 31, 1945 in New Albany to the late W.T. Simpson and Jewel Crum Simpson. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served in Germany. He was a senior certified civil technician for the Mississippi Department of Transportation Project Office where he retired after 42 years. He was a member of the Glenfield Baptist Church.
He attended Tippah-Union High School and graduated from Myrtle High School. He was a member of the Glenfield Baptist Church in New Albany where he served as Training Union Director, Sunday School Superintendent, Deacon, Awana Sparks Leader and Executive Board of the Union County Baptist Association.
He was raised as a Master Mason in Joseph Warren Lodge #71 in New Albany on March 15, 1974, and served as Worshipful Master in 1981 and 1995, and was currently serving as Treasurer. He exalted, in the New Albany Chapter #49, greeted in New Albany Council #3, and Knighted in New Albany Commandery #29. He has served as head of all three York Rite bodies, and was currently serving as Secretary and Recorder of the New Albany York Bodies. Other Masonic affiliations are the Super Excellent Master Degree, Scottish Rite bodies of Corinth, royal Order of Scotland, Excellent President of the Grand Council of Anointed High Priest of Mississippi, past thrice Illustrious Master of the Council of Thrice, Illustrious Master of Mississippi, Holy Royal Arch Knight Templar Priests, Mississippi York Rite College #83, Allied Masonic Degrees, Grade VII of Masonic, Societas of Rosicuciana, Past Prior of Mississippi Priory #36 Knight York Cross of Honour, Past Excellent Chief of T. Olin Gore Jr. Council #86 Knight Masons, Puissant Sovereign of St. Boniface Conclave Red Cross of Constantine and Past Knight Commander of the Order of Knights Preceptor of Mississippi.
He also served as the Most Illustrious Grand Master of the Grand Council Royal and Select Masters of Mississippi in 2004-2005, and the Right Eminent Grand Commander of the Grand Commandery Knight Templar of Mississippi in 2008-2009. He was currently serving as the Most Excellent Grand High Priest of the Grand Chapter Royal Arch of Mississippi 2012-2013.
He received the Grand Council Cryptic Mason of the Year Award in 2002, DeMolay Legion of Honour Award in 2005, the Knight Commander of the Temple in 2002, and the Knight Commander of the Court of Honour in2009.
He was also Grand Representative to Mississippi from West Virginia in the Grand Commandery from 1984 to present, Grand Representative to Mississippi from Texas Grand Council Royal and select Master from 2004 to present,and Grand Representative to Mississippi to Arkansas Grand Chapter Royal Arch Mason from 2004 to present.
He held two Life Sponsors, Associate Patron, Patron and he holds a membership in the Grand Commander’s Club in the Knights Templar Eye Foundation.
He also held perpetual membership in Joseph Warren Lodge #71, New Albany Chapter #49, New Albany Council #3, and New Albany Commandery #29.
Services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 25, 2012 at Glenfield Baptist Church with the Rev. Jerry Lowery and the Rev. Bud Reeves officiating. Interment was in the Glenfield Memorial Park. United Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara Gregory Simpson of New Albany, his daughter, Amy Greer (Chris) of New Albany, two brothers, James Simpson (Gail) and Robert Simpson (Jo), both of New Albany, three grandchildren Caroline Greer, Will Greer, and Morgan Greer, and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother Walter Thomas Simpson.
Pallbearers will be Jerry Lewis, Jerry Reeves, Joe Allred, Eddie Smith, Joey Simpson, Brian Simpson, Carroll Thompson, and Dean Thompson. Honorary pallbearers will be all Masonic Brethren at the funeral.
Visitation was from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Glenfield Baptist Church.
In honor of Mr. Simpson, United Funeral Service, Inc. will fly the flag of the United States Army at the funeral home during visitation and service.
