George Coutoumanos, 84

George A. Coutoumanos, 84, of Tupelo, died Sunday, Dec. 30, 2012, at North Mississippi Medical Center after a brief illness.

He was born Sept. 28, 1928, in Mellia, Spain, to Moes Chocron and Estria Sol Sanaes Chocron. He was a Merchant Marine from 1942-1945. In 1948, he migrated to America, docking in Mobile, Ala., before making his way to Tupelo. He met his wife, Etoyle Ferguson, and they made their home in New Albany. He worked at Mike’s Restaurant in Tupelo for many years and later he worked in the insurance and restaurant business. He had recently moved to The Meadows in Fulton. He was a member of Crestway Baptist Church in Birmingham, Ala.

Services were at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 2, at The Jefferson Street chapel of W. E. Pegues with Dr. David Eldridge officiating. Burial was in Tupelo Memorial Park. W. E. Pegues Funeral Directors was in charge of the arrangements.

Survivors include six children, Cynthia Bailey of Longview, Texas, Michael Coutoumanos (Sandy) of Tupelo, Myara Gravlee of Tupelo, Rita Edwards (Lynn) of Jacksonville, Ala., Alberto Coutoumanos of Birmingham, Ala., and David Coutoumanos of Tuscaloosa, Ala.; 10 grandchildren, Brian Bailey (Wendy) of Longview, Texas, Angie Caldwell (Britt) of Tupelo, Anna Shannon (Jerry) of Vilonia, Ark., Jason Hall (Cindy) of St. Louis, Mo., Christie Hall Gaillard (Kerry) of Tupelo, Sarah Gravlee Otts (Michael) of Saltillo, Harvey Edwards of Jacksonville, Ala., Carol Stone (Marty) of Birmingham, Ala., James Michael Edwards (Amber) of Moody, Ala., and Tyler Edwards (Katie) of Jacksonville, Ala.; 15 great-grandchildren, Caitlin and Conner Bailey, John Michael and Anders Caldwell, Grace and Emily Shannon, Zane, Atlin and Ever Grae Hall, Claire Loden, Corbin Otts, Jessica and Westley Stone, and Shelby and Zac Mason; two brothers, Tony Chocron of Sweden and Robert Chocron (Estelle) of France; one sister, Annette Grave (Lucien) of France.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Etoyle F. Coutoumanos; his parents; two brothers, Fortuna and Simone Chocron; one son-in-law, Guy Gravlee III.

Pallbearers were Brian Bailey, Kerry Gaillard, James Michael Edwards, Tyler Edwards, Tom Todd and Gable Todd.
