Favorite time of the day
What a hard choice last Friday. It was lunch time, one of my two favorite times of the day. The other is dinner, but you probably already guessed that.
It was my turn to order and I had to make a choice. Would it be the bacon cheeseburger combo or the fried chicken strips and fries?
It used to be easy because George’s bacon cheeseburger is the best I have ever eaten. It’s the bacon, really. It’s not thin and wimpy, but hearty and fried crisp. Just the way I used to make it in the frying pan before laziness led me to the pre-cooked stuff warmed in the microwave.
And George Coleman’s crew puts exactly what you want on the cheeseburger. In my case, mayonnaise, lettuce, tomato and pickle. Umm, good.
The first two years we lived here, that’s all I ever ordered. But then Jenny started having the chicken strips. Fried chicken, cooked just right, not dried out. Just the aroma finally led me astray.
Now when I go into George’s, I agonize over my choice. Friday I picked the bacon cheeseburger. But I don’t like choices; I’m a creature of habit.
At each restaurant, I usually settle on a favorite menu item and order it almost every time. About three days a week I eat lunch at Tallahatchie Gourmet. Angele Mueller knows food and I’m sure her menu is filled with lots of tasty items. But 90 percent of the time, I order the chicken club salad with ranch dressing. It’s topped with fried chicken breast chunks.
I’m in such a rut that I even sit at the same little table in the back most days. When it’s occupied, and I have to make another table choice, it’s disconcerting.
I wouldn’t call the chicken club salad a diet meal, but it’s yummy. And in the evening, when Jenny asks me what I had for lunch, I can truthfully say, “Just a salad.”
My other favorite lunch place is El Agave, the Mexican restaurant on Park Plaza Drive. Moises Lemus seems to have hit on a formula for success at a location that has seen several restaurants come and go. The surroundings are nice and the food is served hot.
My lunch rut is two enchiladas (one beef, one chicken), with rice and beans. But I have to limit myself to no more than one El Agave lunch a week.
It’s because of the tortilla chips; they’re so good I can’t stop eating them until the basket is empty. I could gain some serious weight if I ate at El Agave a lot.
All of this writing about lunch is making me hungry. Fortunately, it’s approaching my other favorite time of the day. It won’t be long until it’s time to fire up the grill.
