Fernandez signs with Northwest soccer

An intricate part of New Albany’s success in soccer, Anthony Fernandez will continue his career in the sport after signing with Northwest Community College on May 17.

The former Bulldog has sparked the offense for several years, standing out in the 2012-2013 season, scoring 52 goals, smashing the former record of 28. In the final eight games alone, Fernandez scored 30 goals for New Albany.
“I had great success throughout my high school career,” Fernandez said. “There have been some downfalls, but this year, I did good, breaking the school record for goals.”
Fernandez is looking forward to playing now at Northwest as well as joining his brothers at the school.
“They’ve been behind me since the beginning of the season,” he said. “It’s cool, because my brothers are going there as well, so we’ll be together.”
Fernandez also has a possible opportunity set up after finishing at Northwest. Earlier this year, he tried out at Belhaven, and after his time at a community college, Fernandez feels this will likely be a good move.
“It’s definitely a possibility after I finish these two years,” he said.
“I plan to spend this time working as hard as I can. Their coach has been talking about us having a good chance to win state and maybe going to nationals. There’s a lot to look forward to.”
