Shelby Kitchen, 74

Shelby Jean Bates Kitchen, 74, of Birmingham Ridge, died on Tuesday, May 28, 2013, after an extended illness.
She was born March 9, 1939, to Bilbo and Eva Lou Gable Bates. She graduated from Belden High School in 1956 and attended IJC. She was known for her gorgeous red hair and ready smile. She enjoyed shopping and making friends at Walmart. She was a member of the Beech Springs Baptist Church in Union County. She grew up living and working at Bill Bates Grocery on McCullough Boulevard, where she dipped ice cream cones. During her earlier years she was employed by Lee County Schools, Tupelo City Schools and Quality Stamps and she retired at Behavioral Health.
Services were at 2 p.m. Friday, May 31, at Waters Funeral Home with Bro. Dean Moody and Felix Hutcheson Jr. officiating. Burial was in Lee Memorial Park.
Survivors include her husband and best friend for 52 years, Charles Kitchen of Birmingham Ridge; three children, Ricky Kitchen, Rhonda Herring (Richard) and Robbie Kitchen (Dawn); grandchildren, Justin Kitchen, Madison Kitchen, Asa Herring, McKinnon Herring, Silas Herring, Brandon Ritchey and Garrett Ritchey; one great-grandchild, Sarah Grace Kitchen; one sister, Joan Nanney (Steve) of New Albany.
Pallbearers were Justin Kitchen, Asa Herring, Silas Herring, Brandon Ritchey, Garrett Ritchey and Drew Nanney.
Memorials may be made to Sanctuary Hospice House in Tupelo
