County to sell seized weapons, other equipment at public auction
The Union County Board of Supervisors voted Monday to sell an assortment of seized weapons and vehicles along with surplus county and road equipment at public auction.
The auction will be Saturday, March 1, at the Union County Fairgrounds starting at 9 a.m. with Kathy Chism of Chism Auction of Myrtle in charge.
Items to be sold include both pickup and large trucks, a variety of road equipment and some fire trucks. About 50 handguns, shotguns and rifles will be sold, some valued at more than $1,000.
Although the weapons auction will be closed, the rest of the auction will be open so sellers may consign other vehicles for sale as well. There will be no buyer’s premium on the county items, however, with the auction company receiving a fixed percentage of the sale price. Gun buyers will have to conclude the purchase through a local registered gun dealer to meet legal requirements.
The weapons can be inspected the day of the auction only, starting at 8 a.m. while the other trucks and equipment may be inspected on the day before the auction from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Full- or part-time county employees will not be allowed to bid on items since state ethics laws prevent employees doing any business with the county, County Administrator Terry Johnson said. It was not clear how close a family relationship could be and still legal for a person to bid. A list of items will be available to the auction company website.
No estimate was given as to how much money supervisors hope to bring in but the money will go into the general fund.
In other business supervisors:
- Approved paying one fee for a death examination
- Approved the solid waste register for January
- Approved travel and issuing a manual check for $35 for registration to have a county employee attend the Workers Compensation Seminar Feb. 13.
- Approved a request to have board president Danny Jordan request a check for $22,793 from MDA. This money is going toward the Mississippi-Tennessee Railnet railroad improvement project being done at no cost to the county.
Supervisors did not expect to have much business to deal with next week and, since county offices will close Monday, Feb. 17, the board’s usual meeting day, they recessed to 10 a.m. Monday, Feb. 24.
