Shane Sanderson named MAC Athletic Director of the Year
By Dennis Clayton
Shane Sanderson of New Albany High School has been recognized by the Mississippi Association of Coaches as the 2013-2014 Athletic Director of the Year. Sanderson will be honored at the MAC Banquet on June 27 in Jackson.
“I feel extremely honored and blessed to be recognized by our Mississippi Association of Coaches that represents every school in every class and I am almost at a loss for words,” Coach Sanderson said. “I see the AD as another coach, this is what we strive for, to be recognized as one of the best and for whatever reason, they chose me. It’s quite an honor.”
The selection of the MAC Athletic Director of the Year is voted on by those in the association. Their decision is based on multiple criteria including school achievements and honors. For example, New Albany has been in the top five of the All Sports Award for the past six years and has also won 50 division titles and five state championships over the past seven years.
The MAC has the following on their website concerning who they are and why they exist: “The Mississippi Association of Coaches is a membership organization serving the needs of athletic coaches throughout the state of Mississippi. We represent a variety of coaching specialties including football, basketball, baseball, soccer, softball, volleyball, powerlifting, and tennis.”
“I am excited for Coach Shane Sanderson to receive the honor of 2014 Mississippi Association of Coaches Athletic Director of the Year,” New Albany High School Principal Lance Evans said. “Coach Sanderson works tirelessly to ensure all of our coaches receive the resources needed to be successful. Coach Sanderson is truly an asset to New Albany High School.”
Sanderson has been with New Albany for seven years and has been involved in teaching and coaching for a total of 12 years. Sanderson did his student teaching at New Albany and was offered a coaching job by then principal and coach, Chuck Poer. He felt like Prentiss County was his calling and began coaching at Thrasher. The second time an offer from New Albany came up he knew the time was right. Sanderson and his family proudly call New Albany home.
“Athletics have always been a priority to me and this job has allowed me to do what I love,” Sanderson said. “Athletics are extremely important to me, I think every coach can give a testimonial where athletics was a big deal to them and it certainly was for me. My job allows me to intermingle with every one of our coaches and that’s what makes this job fun. I’ve got a great group of head coaches that are passionate about their sport and we have assistants that work hard and are committed to helping our head coaches and students be the best team possible. To me, every sport is important. If we offer the sport, we owe it to our students to treat it like we would any sport.”
Coach Sanderson recently completed his CAA – (Certified Athletic Administrator) through the NIAAA (National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association).
Sanderson’s wife Cathy works at NEMCC as a secretary in the Dental Hygiene Department and they have two daughters, Summer and Lenzi. Summer is a student at Blue Mountain College and a member of the golf team and Lenzi is a junior at New Albany where she is a member of the golf and volleyball teams.
