JACKSON — Eleven inmates and five staff members have been injured in an altercation at the Mississippi State Penitentiary at Parchman.

Grace Fisher, a spokeswoman for the state Department of Corrections, said two of the inmates injured in Wednesday’s confrontation remained hospitalized Friday. One had been stabbed in the chest and another had been stabbed in the arm.

Fisher said the clash occurred in a gymnasium in the same maximum-security unit where a 35-year-old inmate, Kelvin Bowen, was stabbed to death on Tuesday.

Prison officials said another inmate, 31-year-old Roderick Roshund Lewis, was identified as Bowen’s assailant.
