FURRS COMMUNITY – The driver of an 18-wheeler was airlifted to the North Mississippi Medical Center after his truck and trailer flipped over, blocking both lanes of traffic on Highway 6 in the Furrs community Wednesday afternoon.
Highway Patrol troopers on the scene said the driver of the truck, Marcus Morris, 32, of Belden, was stable and alert when transported Wednesday but had severe injuries to his legs.
He was not wearing a seat belt.
The highway was closed to through traffic for just over three hours as emergency crews cleared the road.
David Evans of Ecru said he and Brad Evans were driving eastbound on Highway 6 when they saw the westbound truck swerve off the road and then back onto the road, crossing the center line and then flipping into the ditch on the other side.
“Our skid marks go all the way up to the trailer,” he said.
The Pontotoc Fire Department, Mississippi Highway Patrol and Pontotoc County Sheriff’s Office worked the accident.
