$2 million at stake in Miss. poker tourney

BILOXI — Some of the best poker players in the world are at the Beau Rivage Resort and Casino in Biloxi this week competing in the Southern Poker Championship on the World Poker Tour.

The televised event from Biloxi will be shown in two parts on Fox Sports News channel May 8 and 15.

WPT host and poker champion Mike Sexton tells The Sun Herald that many of the players are highly educated and poker is their job. Some wear dark glasses and hooded sweat shirts, and minimize distractions with headphones and music. Others chat up their opponents while they size up their game.

Last year’s champ, Hoyt Corkins, is back to defend his crown that won him nearly $740,000.
