TUPELO – The march toward June began Thursday during a kickoff party for the 2010 Tupelo Elvis Festival.
More than 60 volunteers and well-wishers attended the event at the Tupelo Convention & Visitors Bureau.
The highlight of the night was the unveiling of the 2010 festival poster created by Josh Mabus.
“He brought us back a great image for this year. We’re really excited about it,” said Debbie Brangenberg, executive director of the Downtown Tupelo Main Street Association, which oversees the festival.
Mabus said he immersed himself in all things Elvis while trying to come up with an idea.
“YouTube, YouTube, YouTube,” he said. “Movie clips. Elvis on the radio and on the MP3 player. We really used his movie posters as inspiration for this.”
He settled on the theme of “Elvis is Back.” The poster features a photo of the King of Rock ’n’ Roll during one of his first televised concerts after he was discharged from the Army. In the photo, Elvis has a microphone in one hand and salutes the crowd with the other.
It’s the official poster for the 12th Tupelo Elvis Festival, which will be June 4-6 downtown Tupelo.
June may seem like a long way off, but Brangenberg said tickets already have been sold.
“We have visitors lined up from 27 states,” she said.
