4 Miss. cities to get electric scooters

JACKSON — The Mississippi Office of Homeland Security is providing a total of $37,600 to bomb squads in four cities to buy electric scooters.

MOHS officials say the police departments in Biloxi, Tupelo, Clinton and Jackson have placed their orders for the Segway scooters. Delivery is expected sometime this month.

MOHS executive director J.W. Ledbetter says in a news release that the scooters will enable officers to cover larger territories than they could cover on foot and provide accessibility that mass transportation cannot.

Last year in Mississippi, Ledbetter says there were more than 60 bomb squad deployments.

He says training will provided to the squads once the scooters arrive.
