7 injured in crash in Itawamba County

Itawamba County StockSeven children were transported to hospitals Thursday after a two-vehicle crash involving an empty log truck on Highway 178 in Itawamba County.

Mississippi Highway Patrol spokesman Ray Hall said it appeared a teen driver was traveling east near the Alabama state line about 4:30 p.m. and apparently tried to pass a log truck on the right side as the log truck was attempting to make a right turn.

The teen’s 2001 Chevrolet Impala collided with the semi, ran off the road and overturned several times. The driver, another teenager and four children were taken to North Mississippi Medial Center in Tupelo with non-life-threatening injuries.

A 4-year-old was airlifted to Le Bonheur in Memphis with life- threatening injuries after being ejected from the vehicle.

The operator of the empty log truck was not injured.

Hall said it appears none of the children were wearing a seat belt and the toddler was not properly restrained in a child restraint.
