VICKSBURG — The city of Vicksburg is giving people a chance to get on a payment schedule or sign up for community service to pay off about 7,000 overdue fines.
Municipal Court Judge Nancy Thomas says the fines total about $3 million.
The Vicksburg Board of Mayor and Aldermen approved the collection proposal Monday.
The Vicksburg Post reports the fines are for offenses such as traffic tickets and shoplifting.
Thomas says the court is not interested in arresting people but wants the fines paid.
The grace period for those who make arrangements to pay or perform community service, such as picking up litter, will last through March 31, 2010.
Thomas says those with outstanding warrants who do not contact the court will still face arrest.
