9 Miss state troopers appealing suspensions

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — Nine Mississippi state troopers are appealing their suspensions for getting copies of questions used to test candidates for promotion.

The Clarion-Ledger reports (bit.ly/putuNN) that they admit receiving test questions, but feel their punishments are too severe. All were suspended, some were demoted, and none may apply for promotion for three years.

Their lawyer, Dennis Horn of Madison, says they didn’t violate any orders. He says troopers have collected questions from old tests for years to share as study guides, and the Highway Patrol saw it as standard practice.

A Sept. 23 letter from Col. Donnell Berry, commander of the Mississippi Highway Safety Patrol, says patrol officials learned in August about a “potential breach of the new merit promotion testing system.”
