A big song and dance

The members of the 2010 version of Tupelo High School’s Soundwave have one goal: to entertain you. “It’s exciting and it’s going to make you smile,” said Jessica Catledge, a 17-year-old senior.
The group has plucked music from several decades, and put it together for a night of singing and dancing called “Get Into the Groove.”
The title comes from a Madonna song that will be paired with Whitney Houston’s “I Wanna Dance with Somebody.”
“We are doing a little tribute to Michael Jackson. That’s in there,” said Calvin Ellis, Soundwave director. “We’re going to let the girls sing ‘Rockin’ Robin,’ ‘I’ll be There’ and ‘Wanna Be Startin’ Something.'”
The show pulls songs from the ’60s on up to modern times.
“My favorite is the Paramore medley with ‘Hallelujah,’ ‘Fences’ and ‘Misery Business,'” said 18-year-old senior Amelia Ward.
It’s a wide-ranging program that will include a local premier. One of the songs, “This Way,” was written by Soundwave member Ashley Williams, a 15-year-old freshman.
“I wrote the lyrics first, then I created the music,” Williams said. “It’s very pop.”
Throughout the show, Soundwave members will be singing and dancing to music provided by the Structure Combo, THS’ live band.
The band will be on stage, rather than hidden in the orchestra pit.
“We wanted the audience to see them,” Ellis said. “The band and the choir, they are one cohesive unit together. That makes everything happen.”
The performers have been preparing “Get Into the Groove” since before the school year began. Ellis said the result will be “a fun, entertaining night with a wide variety of music.”
