A Protective Barrier

The new cable median barrier’s primary function is safety: to keep errant vehicles from straying into the oncoming traffic of opposite lanes. The barrier also prevents intentional and illegal median crossings. The four-cable and weak post system is designed to absorb the force of vehicle impacts to prevent accidental crossover.
Clark said the barrier has worked in at least one accident already near the Toyota facility.
He said the vehicle took out four posts, but the four cables held and stopped the vehicle from moving into the opposite lanes. The same system is being installed along Highway 82 in Lowndes County. The $9.1 million federally-funded highway project is scheduled for completion on Oct. 11.
