TUPELO – Rose petals will fall from the sky at the Tupelo Regional Airport on Saturday during a public event honoring military men and women.
Organized by various groups, the Petals for Patriots program will begin with a brief ceremony at noon. Then a rose-laden plane will soar above the crowd before dumping gallons of its fragrant cargo below.
“It’s in memory of our military men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice,” said Leslie Pearman, one of the organizers. “We will also honor our local firemen and police due to the date of this year’s event,” which ends in 9/11.
Participants are expected to arrive from throughout the Southeast in airplanes, motorcycles and cars.
Also present will be the Gold Star Mothers, who lost sons or daughters in military conflict.
It’s the first time the event will be held at the Tupelo airport. It previously was held in Pontotoc, but it moved due this year to a large response from participants, Pearman said.
The event will take place on Air Park Road near the large 747 jet.
