ABERDEEN – Following the same procedure of its previous meeting, the board of aldermen voted unanimously to hire Scott Stephens as an Aberdeen Police Department officer, making him the second new officer to the force in February.

Aberdeen Police Chief Henry Randle voiced his opposition of the board’s decision to make Stephens full-time.

“It wasn’t my recommendation to hire him full-time. There was another candidate to consider for full-time. There were other applicants just as good,” said Randle, who recommended Stephens for a part-time position.

Mayor Cecil Belle and Ward 4 alderman Dean Irvin both chimed in to say it was the board’s authority to hire and fire personnel. Randle left the board room by saying that he will have a problem with the hire.
