ABERDEEN – Water bills will increase for about 2,000 customers inside the Aberdeen city limits to counter the rising costs of materials, effective March 1.

“As of January 2014, our brass and meter suppliers have stopped using lead due to a federal law so that means prices will triple. Where we were paying $18 for a meter then, we’re paying $41 now,” said Aberdeen Water Department manager Ed White.

According to Mayor Cecil Belle, the city hasn’t raised the water rate since 1995, but the unanimous decision for the upcoming increase was made in the Jan. 7 board of aldermen meeting.
