ACCIDENTAL SHOOTING CLAIMS LIFE OF ALCORN TEEN

CORINTH – An 18-year-old Alcorn County man is dead after accidentally shooting himself in the head while showing off a handgun to friends.

Wesley Holtsford, 18, Corinth, was pronounced dead at Magnolia Hospital in Corinth late Tuesday night, said Alcorn County Medical Examiner Dan Leeth.

The accidental shooting occurred just before 9 p.m. Tuesday at Holtsford’s home. Officials said Holtsford, a 1995 graduate of Alcorn Central High School and a Northeast Mississippi Community College student, and a group of other young people were examining a 9-mm handgun when it discharged. The group told authorities they thought the gun was empty.

Services for Holtsford will be at 2 p.m. today at the Corinthian Funeral Home Chapel with burial in the Farmington Baptist Church Cemetery in Corinth.
