Affidavits will settle Oxford alderman race

OXFORD – For a second time, the count of affidavit ballots will determine the outcome of a special election for Oxford’s Ward 6 alderman post. The seat was vacated when Brad Mayo resigned to take his new position as state representative.
Returns from Tuesday’s runoff showed Jason Bailey with 394 votes to Katie Morrison’s 379, including absentees. Twenty-five affidavit ballots, however, could reverse the 15-vote lead. They will be certified beginning at 9 a.m. Wednesday.
Affidavits came into play in the first balloting on Feb. 14 as well, when Morrison fell just short of an outright majority in the three-person race.
