Alcorn board looks at rubbish fee refund

CORINTH – Alcorn County supervisors are considering what method to use to refund a 1-mill tax collected during the 2009-2010 fiscal year to support the county rubbish site.
Tax Collector Greg Younger reported to the board in March that approximately $69,600 was collected in error from Corinth residents.
Younger said Monday an attorney general’s opinion would permit a 1-mill tax reduction for Corinth residents in the 2011-2012 fiscal year. The alternative would be to pay the refund directly to the 6,900 people who paid the tax, about 3,000 of whom had an overpayment of $2 or less.
Before making a final decision, the board asked Younger to determine how many properties changed hands since the taxes were collected, since applying the refund to the next budget year’s millage might not return it to the same taxpayer.
