'Alzheimer's and Art'

By Errol Castens, NEMS Daily Journal

TUPELO – Birmingham neurologist Dr. Daniel Potts will present “Art and Alzheimer’s: Dipping into Self” on June 20 from noon to 1:30 p.m. at North Mississippi State Hospital’s multipurpose room. The program is designed for caregivers, social workers, nurses, doctors, students, dementia care specialists, nursing home staff, psychologists and activities directors.
Potts’ presentation focuses on his father, a blue-collar worker who showed no artistic inclinations until he was affected by dementia. After the elder Potts’ diagnosis, however, he began painting vivid and intriguing images full of people, places, items and activities that reflected his life.
Cost for the program is $7.50, and attendees are invited to bring a brown-bag lunch. The program qualifies for Continuing Education credits.
