TUPELO – Post 49 of the American Legion is hosting a flag retiring ceremony today to properly dispose of old American flags.
The ceremony will start at 1 p.m. at Post 49 and will be conducted by the Sons of the American Legion. At the annual event, worn-out flags are collected and disposed of by the proper way of burning them.
John Blanchard, commander for Post 49, said that just like a soldier, the flag too has to be properly retired.
“Burning the flag is the correct way to retire a flag,” said Blanchard. “We want people to know the correct way to do it, so we encourage them to come out and watch.”
The ceremony will start with a flag unfolding, followed by burning in a concrete pit. The ashes will remain in the pit.
