AMORY — Authorities say a volunteer firefighter was killed while responding to a fire call.

Monroe County Coroner Alan Gurley said in a news release that 18-year-old Jacob Anthony Carter of Amory died at North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo Sunday after his SUV ran off the road, overturned and struck a tree.

The accident occurred just before noon on McCullen Road south of Amory.

Gurley says Carter was pronounced around 2 p.m.

Officials say Carter, who was a firefighter with the Becker-Athens Volunteer Fire Department, was not wearing his seat belt.

The accident is under investigation by the Monroe County Sheriff’s Department.
