Amory street to be named after Tuskegee Airman

AMORY – A new street will be named after Lt. Col. Herbert Eugene Carter today.
Carter was the son of Willie Ann Sykes Carter and George Washington Carter. He attended school in Amory and moved to Alabama when he was 15 years old, enrolling in the Tuskegee Institute.
There were 997 Tuskegee Airmen who graduated in 44 classes from 1941 until 1946.
Carter said he plans to try to attend the street’s dedication 1:30 p.m. ceremony, which will be at the end of the street on 111th Street beside West Amory Elementary School. The new street was built primarily with a Community Development Block Grant and a Safe Routes to School grant from the MDOT.
