Angel Food gives bargains to cash-strapped families

TUPELO – Area churches have a food bargain for families in need.
Angel Food Ministries, a nondenominational nonprofit, continues to ship boxes of nutritious food to distribution points in Northeast Mississippi, and local organizers are eager for folks to take advantage.
“There are more options than ever,” said Debbie Andrews, who coordinates Angel Food at St. Andrew’s United Methodist Church in Amory. People from all walks of life take advantage of the food at St. Andrew’s, she added.
Customers no longer have to purchase the $35 signature box, which is designed to feed a family of four for a week, in order to select from a wide variety of specialty options. The August menu features a specialty meat box, which includes four eight-ounce New York strips, eight four-ounce boneless pork chops and eight four-ounce boneless, flavored chicken breasts for only $30.
There are also fruit and vegetable specialty boxes as well as allergen-free selections, choices for senior citizens and snacks to feed hungry children after school.
Like many churches, All Saints’ Episcopal Church in Tupelo usually takes orders early in the month, and customers pick up their orders toward the end of the month.
Most churches accept payment in the form of cash or food stamps, but for those whose grocery budgets are especially tight, that interim can be problem.
Churches are doing all they can to shorten the wait, said Many Atkins, who coordinates Angel Food at All Saints’, adding she hopes that once folks understand the bargain they stand to receive, they’ll find a way to make it work.
Ordering online with a credit or debit card at www.angelfoodministries.com allows customers to view the current menu and to place an order closer to the drop-off date. Online customers can pick up their orders at a local church that handles Angel Food, like All Saints’.
