RALEIGH, N.C. — Former Olympian Antonio Pettigrew has been found dead in Chatham County and authorities say they are unsure if his death was accidental or a suicide.
Chatham County sheriff’s Maj. Gary Blankenship said Tuesday that Pettigrew’s body was found in the backseat of his car, parked to the side of a bridge. Blankenship says the car was locked and there was evidence that the 42-year-old had taken sleeping pills.
Blankenship says “we don’t know if was intentionally or accidental … we might not ever know.”
Pettigrew’s body has been taken to Chapel Hill for an autopsy. Toxicology results aren’t expected back for at least four weeks.
Blankenship says Pettigrew’s wife had reported him missing from their Apex home Monday.
