TUPELO – Walking on part of the BancorpSouth Arena’s roof feels like walking on a trampoline.
“Spongy, yes,” Todd Hunt, the arena’s executive director, said after Monday’s Tupelo Coliseum Commission meeting.
The commission voted to pay $28,000 to The McCarty Company to oversee a project to fix the roof.
McCarty will prepare bid specifications to cover the roof on the warehouse portion of the facility. The underlying structure of that part of the roof has been in place since it was part of the old Tupelo Downtown Mall. That facility also was known as the J.C. Penney Mall, which catered to shoppers throughout the 1970s and ’80s.
“It was re-covered about 16 years ago,” Hunt said.
The project is expected to cost about $650,000, which will come from a fund that was created when the city refinanced the arena’s debt.
Several commissioners took a walk on the roof after Monday’s vote.
“It’s really like a trampoline up here,” said Mo Livingston, commissioner.
