JONESBORO, Ark. (AP) — Police in northeastern Arkansas say a Mississippi man fatally shot himself while handcuffed in the back of a patrol car.
Police say 21-year-old Chavis Carter killed himself July 28 after he was detained in Jonesboro because of outstanding warrants.
About 300 people attended a candlelight vigil for Carter on Monday night at a Jonesboro church.
Addressing those gathered, the Rev. Adrian Rodgers said everyone is confused about how Carter could have fired a gun while handcuffed, but that they shouldn’t blame the police.
Police tell The Jonesboro Sun (http://is.gd/fhldW6 ) that witness statements and dash-cam video support the accounts from officers, who say Carter shot himself with a handgun in the back seat of the car.
