Arrests made in fatal beating in Lafayette County

OXFORD – Three men and one woman have been charged in connection with the beating death last Thursday of a 69-year-old Oxford man.
Willie Anthony Cannon, 24, Adam Cory Ferguson, 20, and Justin Eugene Montez, 25, all of Oxford, have been charged with capital murder and are being held without bond in the Lafayette County Detention Center.
Kasie Lynn Jones, 20, of Oxford, was charged with accessory after the fact in the case. She is being held in lieu of $100,000 bond.
Derald “Pete” Connell was discovered severely injured on April 1 after sheriff’s deputies responded to a 911 call reporting a disturbance near the Brittany Woods subdivision just east of Oxford – an area to which police frequently are called.
Connell was transported to Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi but died shortly afterward.
Lafayette County Sheriff’s Investigator Scott Mills said the beating took place near Connell’s house.
“I don’t know whether the victim knew the suspects, but robbery appears to be a part of the motive,” Mills said.
He would not disclose whether weapons beyond fists and feet were used in the attack, saying only that “it appears he was beaten.” A preliminary coroner’s report ruled the death a homicide from multiple blunt force trauma.
Authorities continue to investigate the crime. Anyone with information can call the Lafayette County Sheriff Department at (662) 234-6421.
