HATTIESBURG — At least five people were shot Monday at a restaurant on U.S. Highway 49 in Hattiesburg.

Hattiesburg police spokesman Lt. Eric Proulx said Scott Tyner, 44, of Hattiesburg, walked into Cucos restaurant and opened fire sometime after 3 p.m. CDT.

“There was no confrontation, there was no exchange of words,” Proulx said.

Tyner ran but only got a short distance before police arrived and arrested him on five counts of aggravated assault, Proulx said. Tyner is being held at the Forrest County Jail. No bond had been set.

Proulx said investigators have no obvious motive to the crime at this time. “We don’t know why he did it,” he said.

Dispatchers received a call about the shooting at 3:31 p.m., Proulx said.

The restaurant is located across a four-lane highway from Forrest General Hospital.

There were no immediate reports on the injured people’s conditions or identities.
