TUPELO – Mantachie municipal judge Kirk Tharp was free on $500 bond after he was charged with assaulting a community college student.
Tharp, a Tupelo attorney, also is the town of Sherman’s prosecuting attorney.
A complaint filed Sept. 10 in Lee County Justice Court claims that Tharp caused a disturbance at Mooreville One Stop and injured 18-year-old Kurtis Yarbrough after the ICC student and others in a vehicle parked at the business.
The court record shows Tharp is set for an Oct. 18 hearing on the charge.
Mantachie Mayor Jeff Butler said the board of aldermen was to discuss the issue at a meeting late Thursday. Sherman Mayor Ben Logan could not be reached for comment.
Tharp, a former Lee County Bar president, declined to comment. He’ll be represented by attorney Victor Fleitas.
