Authorities have suspect in black bear killing

MCCOMB, Miss. (AP) — Authorities say they have found a suspect in the December shooting of a black bear in Amite County but won’t release his name until federal charges are filed.

The 150-pound male bear was found shot to death in the Busy Corner community of Amite County on Dec. 28.

Maj. Lane Ball of the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks said charges are being filed in federal court.

The Louisiana black bear is a subspecies of the American black bear and is a federally threatened subspecies.

Brad Young, bear biologist with the Mississippi wildlife department, estimated there are about 120 black bears in Mississippi, of which 80 percent are Louisiana black bears.
