MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A baby giraffe was born at the Memphis Zoo, bringing the giraffe herd to seven.
The Commercial Appeal reports baby Akili was born Thursday and temporarily taken off display because of the cold weather. Zoo spokeswoman Tiffany Langston said she will be out again once it gets warmer.
The zoo went for more than a decade without a baby giraffe, but Akili is the fourth baby giraffe in as many years to be born to parents Marilyn and Kenya.
She is 6 feet 2 inches tall and 125 pounds. When she is full grown she will be between 15 and 17 feet tall, and weigh about 2,500 pounds.
