BancorpSouth to fix debit card error

TUPELO – BancorpSouth will refund charges caused by an error in which the bank double-charged some debit card transactions.
The Tupelo-based bank said Tuesday that a processing problem caused debit card transactions used as a credit to be posted twice Monday night.
Those transactions involved debit cards in which the PIN number wasn’t used to complete the purchase.
“In reviewing your checking account activity, you may notice duplicate debit card transactions when used as a credit on 12/27/10,” said a statement issued by the bank. “This was due to an internal error.”
The bank said it would credit affected accounts Tuesday night. A bank official said it was unclear how many customers were charged twice.
Randy Burchfield, BancorpSouth’s director of corporate marketing, said the bank will refund overdraft charges if they resulted from the double charges.
He advised customers with questions to call the bank’s help line at (888) 797-7711.
