Baptist Memorial Health Care Corporation representatives told Lafayette County supervisors on Monday that Baptist would commit to putting its proposed new hospital within the existing city limits of Oxford.
With this commitment, the Memphis-based hospital system is pledging not to use its “Black Bear” site west of Oxford on Highway 6.
“We’re taking that site off the table,” said attorney Dick Cowart. “We will not put the hospital there.”
Several sites within the city limits are still being considered.
Baptist will continue negotiations with Lafayette County and the City of Oxford, which jointly own the existing hospital. Baptist leases the current hospital through 2034 and has proposed buying the existing facility and building a $300 million regional hospital to replace it.
