MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — State officials say a Bartlett soldier killed in Afghanistan will receive the Tennessee Fallen Heroes Medal.

Gov. Bill Haslam and Department of Veterans Affairs Commissioner Many-Bears Grinder said Tuesday that Stephen Michael New also will receive the Bronze Star Medal, the Purple Heart, the Mississippi Medal for Valor and several other service-related awards.

New was fatally shot during an attack on his unit in the Sarobi District of Kabul Province on July 28.

New was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 20th Special Forces Group (Airborne), Jackson, Miss.

The 29-year old soldier grew up in Memphis and graduated from Bolton High School in Arlington in 2003.

New’s remains are expected to arrive at Millington Regional Jetport on Wednesday.
