BASKETBALL UPDATE: No. 20 Mississippi State (19-6, 6-4 SEC)

By Brad Locke/NEMS Daily Journal

Looking back: MSU got revenge on Ole Miss, taking a 70-60 victory on Thursday. Two days later, however, the Bulldogs fell short against Georgia, 70-68 in overtime.
Looking ahead: After a three-game homestand, it’s back on the road this week. Tuesday brings a trip to LSU (8 p.m., ESPNU), then Saturday it’s a visit to Auburn (7 p.m., FSN). MSU won the first meetings against both teams.
Who’s hot: Dee Bost had a career-high 13 assists against Ole Miss. In last week’s game, the senior point guard made 12 of 26 shots (46.2 percent) and averaged 18.0 points. Bost is averaging 5.0 assists per game, tops in the SEC.
Who’s not: Freshman Rodney Hood has lost his touch, shooting 6 of 18 overall and 3 of 12 from 3-point range the last two games. He remains third on the team in scoring, at 11.1 points per game.
RPI watch: The Bulldogs fell hard, 13 spots down to 45 in the RPI rankings, according to Georgia, which also beat Arkansas last week, has seen its ranking jump from 126 to 97 the past week. Looking ahead, LSU is ranked 76th, while Auburn is 132nd.
Bottom line: MSU can ill afford any more losses like the one to Georgia, otherwise it will find itself on the NCAA tournament bubble. The road games won’t be easy – State is 1-3 there in the SEC this year. LSU is 4-1 in league home games, while Auburn is 3-2.
