BASKETBALL UPDATE: Ole Miss (14-7, 4-3 SEC)

By Parrish Alford/NEMS Daily Journal

Looking back: The Rebels split a pair of home games, coming up short in a chance for a big RPI win against Florida (64-60) then holding off a struggling but fiery South Carolina team (66-62).
Looking ahead: The Rebels have a bye during the week and don’t play again until a 7 p.m., trip to Alabama, a game to be televised by ESPN2.
Who’s hot: Murphy Holloway. Holloway was a member of the South Carolina squad last year, though he sat out per NCAA transfer rules. He received an NCAA waiver upon his return to Ole Miss and had 14 points, 11 rebounds, four assists and three steals against the Gamecocks.
Who’s not: Bench freshmen. The playing rotation has whittled down, and minutes are fewer for LaDarius White and Maurice Aniefiok. White got four minutes and was 1-for-2 shooting, Aniefiok two minutes and was 0-for-1.
RPI watch: Ole Miss begins the week with an RPI of 41. The Rebels have a chance for a quality RPI win at Alabama, which begins the week at 35 in the RPI.
Bottom Line: The Rebels missed a chance for a great statement win against Florida but were able to successfully navigate the quick turn of Thursday-Saturday games. They avoided the dolldrums that often come from a close, emotional loss, and that wasn’t easy to do against a South Carolina match-up zone that kept the Rebels from extending the lead and getting way out in front in the game’s final minutes.
