MEMPHIS — State wildlife officials have tranquilized a black bear in suburban Memphis after it apparently had roamed through central Alabama and north Mississippi.

The juvenile bear was being checked Wednesday by veterinarians before being released, probably in East Tennessee.

According to The Commercial Appeal, it had been sighted by dozens of people in recent weeks in Alabama, Mississippi and in counties east of Memphis. The bear was seen in Prentiss County.

The bear, which weighed about 130 pounds, appeared to be in good shape when it was tranquilized in Lakeland just south of Interstate 40.
