TUPELO – The city today will permanently close the intersection at Beech Springs Road and North Gloster Street/Barnes Crossing Road.
Motorists instead must use a new connector road at U.S. Highway 145 just north of the existing intersection. A series of barricades and traffic lights will guide drivers through the change.
It comes as construction of the northern loop nears the former intersection. A project of the Major Thoroughfare Program, the northern loop is a new five-lane road that will connect west Tupelo to the busy Barnes Crossing shopping district.
The easternmost portion of this road goes through the former intersection, necessitating its closure.
An estimated 20,000 motorists travel Barnes Crossing Road daily, and roughly 3,700 drivers use Beech Springs, according to the Mississippi Department of Transportation.
“It will cause a bit of confusion, even though it’s well marked, because we’re simply just creatures of habit,” said Public Works Director Sid Russell. “Those that are accustomed to traveling that way will have to adjust.”
The northern loop will cost an estimated $22 million when it’s complete in another year or two.
