Bell appointed to replace Bain on Lee County School Board

TUPELO – The Lee County School board has appointed Ronnie Bell as an interim board member, replacing Jim Bain, who resigned earlier this week.

The board approved Bell in a specially-called meeting at the district office on Thursday. He will represent district 2, which includes Saltillo and Guntown, and will serve until the first Monday in January.

Bell is currently the Three Rivers Division Director of Governmental Functions. He spent 19 years as the Lee County county administrator, until retiring from that job in 2008.

“He knows the processes, and he is familiar with our district,” said school board President Sherry Mask. “We felt like he would be the most informed person we could get to do it.”

A special election will be held in conjunction with the November general election. The window for candidates to qualify for that election is Aug. 8 to Sept. 7. Bell said that he would not be a candidate.

“It is an opportunity to serve,” Bell said. “The community has been good to me.”

Bain cited personal reasons for his resignation.
