Biggers grants new trials, throws out other charges against Shoemaker, Garner

By PATSY R. BRUMFIELD/Daily Journal

OXFORD – New trials were ordered today on federal charges against businessmen Ray Shoemaker of Tupelo and Lee Garner of Batesville.
Senior U.S. District Judge Neal B. Biggers Jr. also granted the men out-right acquittals on other counts, but denied some that Shoemaker asked be overturned.
Shoemaker and Garner were indicted and found guilty on multiple counts in April that they conspired and participated in a kickback and bribery scheme while Shoemaker was a top executive at Tri-Lakes Medical Center in Batesville.
They filed appeals immediately after a jury convicted them in Oxford. They faced long prison terms and large fines for the convictions.
