TUPELO – The Defenders Law Enforcement Motorcycle Club donated more than $2,000 to the Mallory Conlee Child Abuse Fund at the Lee County Sheriff’s Department on Monday.
Conlee, 2, was abused and killed by William Matthew Wilson on State Park Road in 2006. The Defenders LEMC chose the child abuse fund, set up in Conlee’s name to help families and victims of child abuse, as their first fundraiser.
The Defenders had their Child Abuse Foundation Benefit Ride on Saturday at the Lee County Ag Center.
“We had a lot of people show up, and we were thankful for that,” said Steve Chambers, vice president of the Dixie Thunder Chapter. “We were honored to raise that much.”
The day included auctions, poker run, live music, kids’ events and vendors, and on Monday the Defenders presented a check for $2,654.80 to Lee County investigator Donna Franks.
“So many people in Lee County wanted to help after (Conlee) died,” Franks said, so the fund was set up in Conlee’s name. The money is used now to help children who have been abused and help pay for families’ court costs.
“We’ve helped a lot of families since 2006,” she said.
The Defenders saw an overwhelming response from fellow bikers in Northeast Mississippi and from chapters in nearby states.
Chambers said they hope this is the first of many events to raise money for the fund.
“We hope to double our money next year,” he said.
