OXFORD – Former President Bill Clinton will pump up potential voters for U.S. Rep. Travis Childers on the University of Mississippi campus Thursday.
While the Childers campaign declines to say if Clinton will endorse his fellow Democrat’s re-election campaign, their appearance together makes that support likely.
Clinton is expected to appear at 11:30 a.m. in The Grove on campus.
A Childers spokesman termed the event a “Get Out the Vote Rally.”
Clinton and Congressman Childers will both be speaking at the rally, encouraging young voters to vote Nov. 2.
The event is open to the public and admission will be free, the campaign said.
Security appears a likely issue, though. The campaign announcement noted that “The doors will open at 11 am.,” which generally indicates participants should expect some kind of screening before they can enter the rally space.
Since the location, The Grove Stage, has no “doors,” it’s possible some type of security barriers will be in place. Former presidents’ public events usually call for extra security measures.
Democrat Childers faces Republican Alan Nunnelee and others on the Nov. 2 general election ballot.
Political observers say it’s a close race between the two party nominees.
