Tupelo Furniture Market moving spring event to January

The Tupelo Furniture Market is moving its 2014 spring market from February to mid-January.

Market Chairman and owner V.M. Cleveland and President Kevin Seddon confirmed today that the spring market will be held Jan. 16-19 (Thursday-Sunday).

This year’s fall market will go on as scheduled, Aug. 15-18.

Seddon said market officials met with all of its major exhibitors to gauge their reaction and get their input on the change. The TFM had tried a January market a few years ago, but it was not well-attended. However, Tupelo market officials say the industy – and the economy – have changed.

The spring Tupelo market, however, will overlap the Dallas market and the Atlanta market, which means some exhibitors – mainly accessories companies – will be forced to choose which market(s) to attend.

But TFM officials said there has been popular sentiment to move the Tupelo market to better accommodate tax season and the President’s Day holiday, two major furniture-buying holidays.

Report: BancorpSouth offering early retirements

According to the Arkansas Business, BancorpSouth Inc. is asking for voluntary early retirements for some of its workers.

The article says the Tupelo-based financial holding company and parent of BancorpSouth Bank is making the offers to those 60 and over and with 10 consecutive years of experience with the company.

Arkansas Business also quoted a BancorpSouth spokesman who confirmed a memo had been sent “internally” to offer the early retirement packages that the company thinks will “improve the bank’s efficiency and reduce costs.”

Details are scant at this point, and the spokesman said BancorpSouth didn’t want to speculate on how many people might accept the offer.
